Capacity-Building for the Next Generation of Leaders: Korea Maritime & Ocean University Conducts Sailing Ceremony of Training Ships for Ocean Voyage
Korea Maritime & Ocean University (President Deog-hee Doh) announced on May 17 that the university hosted the Sailing Ceremony of Training Ships for Ocean Voyage for the first semester of 2023 in front of the Hanbada (training ship) at the wharf for the first time in three years.
Ocean voyage training allows trainees to practically apply the theories learned in the classroom to activities in the ocean.
The training is considered a valuable opportunity for students to hone their skills and develop themselves as the next generation of leaders in the maritime and fisheries sector.
The sailing ceremony was organized to provide a safe navigation and high-quality training environment for trainees.
With the sailing ceremony, trainees at the College of Maritime Sciences, Korea Maritime & Ocean University, will embark on an approximately three-week ocean voyage around the world.
The Hannara (training ship) will depart from Busan and sail to Hakodate (Japan), Osaka (Japan), and Busan, while the Hanbada will sail from Busan to Naha (Japan), Tokyo (Japan), and Busan.
The ceremony was attended by President Deog-hee Doh and other top officials from within and outside the university.
The ceremony was held in the following order: opening ceremony, pledge of allegiance, delivery of the sailing order, congratulatory remarks from domestic and international guests, response remarks from the captains of training ships, closing ceremony, and boarding and departure of trainees.
The event was attended by juniors and seniors from the university and many alumni, who wished the trainees a safe training voyage.
President Doh at Korea Maritime & Ocean University said, “Ocean voyage training plays a critical role in improving skills to become highly skilled licensed mariners. I hope the trainees make their best efforts to gain a lot of wisdom and experience from the ocean. Most importantly, I hope you work hard to ensure a safe ocean voyage.”
Korea Maritime & Ocean University has two training ships: Hannara (9,196 tons), the largest training ship in Asia, and Hanbada (6,686 tons).
