Brand value of Maritime and Busan

The full text of the principal Kim Soon-gap, published on Busan daily newspaper -Maritime Column-,dated April 4th As we are all aware, Busan is advancing as a maritime city of Asia and the world. This definitely is not due to its close proximity to the sea. The reason for this would be thanks to its world 5th size port in marine transportation, it takes important and central position in the related industries of port and naval architecture materials and it also produces professional manpower related to maritime which is currently under aggressive progress. Busan`s position as a maritime city will elevate even more once port associated facilities including the new Busan port is completed. The place of interest in the local area such as Haeundae beach and Jagalchi market that have strong maritime image are making Busan as a prestigious maritime city. The participatory government`s decision in relocating the public institution of maritime and fisheries fields will also contribute in enhancing maritime central function of Busan. However, there something is still lacking for Busan to mark itself as the central city in the world maritime. Koreans would conjure up Busan naturally when they think of the sea but does it apply the say way to other Asians and foreigners? I am afraid we still have a long way to go to be the world central maritime city in Asia and in the world. Well then, is there a different theme in which we can elevate Busan`s brand value to the international level, not just as a maritime city? I am afraid that it would be far off to find such a theme. We have to compete with popular continental cities such as Seoul and Paris and it is difficult to dominate a leading position in a specific area. Therefore, since Busan has been promotion its brand through the sea for decades ,Busan should keep develope and inherit its positive point which is the best and effective way to improve urban brand of Busan. We must excel to organize an environment to position Busan as the best maritime city and a maritime city of the world best five. The re-development issue of the north port is emerging as a key issue in Busan. This re-development will definitely facilitate to amplify Busan to be a world maritime city. The government and Busan city is having a great controversy on direction and trend of the north port re-development project between environment-friendly sydney type and the Dubai type that has commercial function. This controversy over a project direction on the north port seems desirable because it could be a process to supplement and moodily for a perfect development plan. The north port to be re-developed should be a great piece of work so that maritime cities of foreign countries would bench-mark. In that way, Busan would prepare a ground to resuscitate as the world maritime city. In addition, (a tentative name) World Ocean Forum (WOF) that started controversy by suggestion of Maritime industry development Association of which its headquarter is in Busan will be able to take part in embossing Busan as the world maritime city. As the world economy forum held in Davos, Swiss every year is resounded to `Davos Forum`, the world ocean forum that represents Busan would be resounded as `Busan Forum` as well once activity of the world ocean form is in the right track. Therefore, the people and the city of Busan should perform vast support and interest in developing the world ocean form to make it a global forum. There are countless maritime resources that would imprint Busan as the world maritime city. The south port including all kinds of maritime and fisheries related resources should be designed in harmony in order to view it as a whole picture. On the other hand, we would have to consider to build a several world symbolic sculptures such as Opera House in Sydney, Australia and of course we need to have macroeconomic appreciative insight of urban aesthetics. The beset way to improve the city brand for Busan is that it does it through maritime. For this, it is desperate that Busan city and other companies related to maritime and institutes to invest resolutely and carry out close research. Busan, the world maritime city doesn`t just come by.
