Korea Maritime & Ocean University celebrates 80th anniversary, sets sail for next 100 years
Festivities to connect past and present and declare future vision
Korea Maritime & Ocean University (KMOU, President Ryoo Dong Keun) will celebrate its 80th anniversary on November 5 with a major commemorative project to inherit the traditions and achievements of the past 80 years and lay the foundation for the next 100 years.
KMOU announced that it has designated the last week of October as the 80th anniversary week and will hold a series of events covering academics, culture, communication, and international exchange.
The 80th anniversary project is significant for commemorating past achievements as well as for uniting the capabilities of the university's members and fostering harmony to drive innovation and a new leap forward at the center of a rapidly changing era.
The university aspires to consolidate its identity as a world-class maritime university that has led the way in fostering maritime talent in Korea and advance into the future using the 80th anniversary as a historical inflection point.
◆ Intensive “Achi Sea Festival Week” from October 27th to 30th
The core of the commemorative project is the “Achi Sea Festival Week with Local Residents,” a four-day event held from October 27th to 30th.
During this period, major events such as the 80th anniversary ceremony, 80th anniversary marathon, university festival, AMFUF (Asian Maritime and Fisheries University Forum) student presentation contest, and KMOU graduate academic presentation contest will be held.
The 80th anniversary ceremony will be held on Tuesday, August 28, where various awards will be presented and celebratory performances will be held. After the ceremony, a time capsule sealing ceremony will be held to seal the symbolic items of the university.
In addition, in October, the university successfully hosted ▲ the MBC University Song Contest (Oct. 3), ▲ participated in the International Association of Maritime Universities Conference 2025 (IAMU AGA25) to form a global maritime education network (Oct. 15-17), ▲ participated in the Asian Maritime and Fisheries University Forum (AMFUF 2025) General Assembly (Oct. 22-24), ▲ Hannara's port call in Jakarta, onboard reception for alumni, promotion of the university to local residents, and exchange events between STIP universities (Oct. 21-24), and ▲ Art exhibition Eternal Wave (Oct. 28-Nov. 21).
◆ Laying the foundation for 100 years by recording history and creating future legacies
The KMOU is preparing for the future by transcending one-time events to record the historical value of the 80th anniversary and create a legacy for future generations.
A project is underway to compile an 80-year history of the university, and a “time capsule” containing the university's symbols and the wishes of its members will be placed at the anniversary ceremony.
In addition, the “80th Anniversary Commemorative Plaza” project, which will transform the central park into an open grassy plaza, is scheduled for completion in September 2026.
Further, the university is actively producing promotional content to enhance its brand value.
An 80th anniversary documentary and a new university promotional video will be produced, and an 80th anniversary typeface that visualizes the university's history and identity is being developed.
"The 80th anniversary will be a new starting point for our school to recall its glorious history and to reemerge as a world-class maritime university," stated Ryoo Dong Keun, president of KMOU. "We hope that this commemorative project will be a festive place for all members, alumni, and the local community to communicate and unite together, and we will open the next 100 years with vigor."
