Korea Maritime & Ocean University Holds Departure Ceremony for the 2026 Spring Semester Training Vessels’ Ocean Voyage
Korea Maritime & Ocean University (President Dong Keun Ryoo) held a departure ceremony for the 2026 spring semester training vessels’ ocean voyage at the university’s training vessel pier on May 6, 2026. The ocean voyage training program at Korea Maritime & Ocean University enables students to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom to real-world maritime environments through a variety of practical exercises, thereby preparing them to become the next generation of leaders in the maritime field. The university’s training vessels embark on ocean voyages every semester, traveling to destinations around the world with safety as their top priority.
The departure ceremony was attended by 296 trainees, who are expected to become future leaders in the maritime sector, along with university faculty and staff, trainees’ parents, and alumni.
Post the opening ceremony, the event included the following programs: ▲ Pledge of Allegiance ▲ Presentation of the sailing order ▲ Congratulatory remarks by distinguished guests ▲ Remarks by the training vessel captains ▲ Closing ceremony, and ▲ Boarding of the trainees and vessel departure. The "Manning the Rail" ceremony, during which students aboard the training vessel toss colored ribbons to family members and friends gathered on the pier, was also held as part of the departure ceremony.
The ocean voyage training program is scheduled to run for 28 days, from May 6 to June 2, 2026.
The training vessel Hanbada is scheduled to return to Busan after calling at Osaka (Japan), Keelung (Taiwan), and Kagoshima (Japan). Another training vessel, Hannara, is scheduled to return to Busan after visiting Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and Osaka (Japan). At each port of call, trainees will experience local cultures and gain an in-depth understanding of each country’s maritime industry.
Through this ocean voyage training, students of National Korea Maritime and Ocean University, who are poised to become future merchant marine officers, are expected to gain hands-on navigation experience, strengthen their global competencies as marine officers, and further develop their professional capabilities. The program is also expected to boost efforts to attract outstanding international students and expand exchange programs with educational institutions in marine-related fields.
President Dong Keun Ryoo of Korea Maritime & Ocean University stated, “The ocean voyage training conducted aboard the Hannara and Hanbada vessels is central to our university’s identity and represents one of our core educational programs.” He added, “I hope this training will serve as an opportunity for trainees to cultivate aspirations as vast as the open sea.”
