Korea Maritime University received Grand Prize as the best university in educational donation at "the 1st Korea Educational Donation Award Ceremony 2012" held at EL TOWER, Seoul on December 7th.

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity, Korea Educational Donation Award was implemented for the first time this year for the purpose of boosting the morale and promoting social awareness of and participation in educational donation by discovering and awarding excellent institutions, organizations, and schools which contributed to activating educational donation. This year, 60 institutions were selected among 250 candidates and six universities including KMU received awards.

KMU's various educational programs for the underprivileged students have played a key role in strengthening social responsibilities of the university. Since 2007, KMU has conducted "1:1 Same Gender Customized Mentoring," which aimed to link KMU students with disadvantaged youths who are from low-income families or cannot afford private lessons. "LED Science Experiment Classroom for Youths," another program of KMU has benefited students from low-income families and encouraged their interest in advanced science and technology.

KMU officials said, "Through our educational donation programs, we have tried to raise KMU students' spirits in pro bono activities and improve community students' character and learning environment. Also, we will make further efforts to cultivate future talents by planning and operating more programs."
