Dreams and Wishes of KMU Reborn as Mural
New Mural on the 620-meter-long 'Han-lim-je' connecting the world's only island campus and Yeong-do
On Sep. 22, students of Korea Maritime University transformed the Han-Lim-Je Causeway that connects the campus on Achi Island and Young-do into an attraction which shows the university's past, present, and future. More than 1,000 students representing 68 clubs, student councils, and departments worked on repainting the causeway mural from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day, and fostered their love of school and unity.
KMU has promoted a project for improving the causeway mural with specialists since last May. The newly painted causeway is expected to effectively introduce and promote the history and departments of KMU as well as various student activities. Also, it will provide a fresh attraction for the increased tourists and visitors to the National Maritime Museum near the campus.
This day, the actual painting work was done on the two separate parts of the causeway whose total length is 620m. KMU's history, current images and visions were painted at the mouth of the causeway, and promotions of each department and club covered its latter half. Under the specialists' guidance, the students worked on their assigned sections of 3.9m wide and 1.4m high and these sections totaled 102.
The causeway of KMU was constructed to facilitate traveling between the campus and Youngdo after the campus moved to Achi Island in 1974. The access road on the causeway was officially named Han-lim-je last July in memory of the late Lee Han-Lim (former minister of construction), who contributed to constructing the causeway.
The causeway has attracted the attention of both Youngdo residents and visitors with the witty mural created by the students since the late 1990's. However, the mural publicizing departments and clubs of KMU received complaints ranging from students' amateurish designs to old and messy appearance caused by peeled-off and worn-out paint. “Through today's event, students' pride and love of school are getting bigger while they were participating in the painting. I expect that KMU's causeway painting will become the community's landmark like Taejongdae and the National Maritime Museum,” Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Jeong Hong-Yul, said.
