▲Professor Seongjun Kim making his presentationThe First International Congress of Maritime History to be held in a Non-European City:Institute of International Maritime Affairs at KMOU in Busan, 2024Institute of International Maritime Affairs at Korea Maritime and Ocean University (Moon-Su Jeong, Head of Institute) has achieved the distinction of hosting the 9th International Congress of Maritime History in Busan in 2024. This was achieved by winning the final competition against Estonia Museum and Finland University during the 8th General Meeting of the International Maritime History Association held in Porto, Portugal, recently. The International Maritime History Association is the most decorated academic conference in the field of maritime history and ventured into academics with the session “The Shipping Industry in the 19-20th Century,” at the 9th International Congress of Economic History in 1986. In June 1989, the International Journal of Maritime History (IJMH), an academic journal in the same league as SCOPUS, was first published. The International Maritime History Association generally holds the International Congress of Maritime History in European cities, with the first being hosted in Liverpool in 1992, followed by cities such as Amsterdam/Rotterdam (1992), Esberg (1996), Corfu (2000), Greenwich (2008), Ghent (2012), Fremantle (2016), and Porto (2022), all led by Western scholars. The 8th congress, held in Porto, Portugal on the 29th of last month, presented 180 research papers by scholars from over 30 countries.Busan is expected to host the 9th International Congress of Maritime History, the first non-European city to do so. The presentation provided by Seongjun Kim, a professor at the Division of Navigation Convergence Studies, under the slogan “For the Diversification of International Maritime History Association,” has played a key role in achieving this feat. International Maritime History Association has been looking for a way to overcome limited expansion opportunities because of its Europe and West-centric nature. The presentation by Professor Seongjun Kim, who participated as a representative of the Institute of International Maritime Affairs, was the deciding factor. The main agency, Institute of International Maritime Affairs at Korea Maritime and Ocean University, seeks to contribute to the diversification of International Maritime History Association by hosting maritime historians from Far East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, India, and Africa. This will be done through co-operation with the World Committee of Maritime Culture Institute, The Korea Association of Shipping and Logistics, The Korea Association of Shipping and Port Societies, and Asia Maritime University Association.▲Moon-Su Jeong, Head of Institute of International Maritime AffairsMoon-Su Jeong, the head of the Institute of International Maritime Affairs, stated, “The Institute of International Maritime Affairs, the domestic and overseas base for research about the relationship between maritime arts and humanities, has proved that it is the platform for international maritime history research, and this will be a good opportunity to publicly promote the roles of Korea Maritime and Ocean University, as well as the activities that have been carried out so far by the City of Busan, like the 2030 World Expo.”
